The Filipino Inquest: Rising up to Glory

by Ariel Rojas

Philippine’s unpredicted 2-0 victory over Vietnam at the 30th SEA Games 2019 has marked the ascent of a new contender into the ranks.

For years, the men’s regu title was dominated by Vietnam, Thailand and many more. This all changed when the Philippines shocked and eliminated the outstanding Vietnamese team in the semi-finals. Sepak is no longer a game prevailed by a few generational figures; it now demands the need for stronger, better-coached national programs.

The PH team, led by Jason Huerte, won because of their collective strength and combined efforts. Their victory was a triumph of the team and a precise system. Every player, including key scorers Rheyjay Ortouste and Ronsited Gabayeron, had a defined role, showcasing their determination and unwavering discipline. This methodical, cohesive approach proved superior rather than relying on individual talent itself.

Their win as the relative underdog opens the door for everyone. The result brings exciting unpredictability to future competitions. Reputation and history no longer guarantee success; tactical development and team chemistry are now the new keys to earning success.
